Review “Winter on the Bernina” Continental Modeller February 2003.

Sharp curves, steep gradients, and breathtaking scenery make the Bernina line, opened in 1906 between St. Moritz and Tirano, one of the most attractive sections of the metre gauge Rhätische Bahn network, and it is even more impressive in winter, This production presents the many facets of winter operations between Pontresina and Poschiavo, when snow, wind, and freezing temperatures make the work difficult and dangerous. Snow storms which almost confine staff to the stations contrast with the cold stillness of the almost deserted Cavaglia station, and some fantastic panoramas on a clear sunny day between Ospizio Bernina, some 2,2556m above sea level, and Alp Grüm, with clouds in the valley below. We ride with the modern electric snow clearer Xrotet 9218 early in the morning, witness how it follows the spreader, and there is fabulous footage of the steam-powered rotary snowplough Xrotd 9213 in action. One cannot help but feel for the cameraman who braved the elements to acquire this material! The Initial menu screen gives the choice of five sections: “Winter on the Bernina”, the actual video programme, with full narration and some use of backing music; “Xrotd 9213”, “Cab ride”, and “Winter”, which access video sequences used to make the main programme but include extra footage, and are presented without commentary or music, just the location sound; and “Photo album”, which presents a slide show that automatically steps through about thirty or so images, beginning with historic black & white pictures and finishing with more recent colour views, the images are captioned for subject and (for the most part) location, but not date. Throughout, the picture quality is simply superb, and the programme has been expertly compiled and edited, with pictures and voice-over perfectly matched – no mean feat when working in three languages! A significant advantage of the DVD format is that the viewer can select the language of the commentary – in this case, there is a choice of Dutch, German, or English. The English version is clearly delivered and perfectly fluent, with very few hints that it was not originated by a native speaker. In short, this is an impressive and enjoyable look at winter on the Bernina, the next best thing to being there – indeed, probably better, given the privileged access which the camera crew enjoyed – and without having to freeze!
